The place. Its history. Now as an exhibition.
The Mozarthaus and its history
Mozart lived at Domgasse 5 from 1784 to 1787 – and created some of his most significant works here, including the opera Le Nozze di Figaro. For this reason, the house was referred to from generation to generation as the "Figaro House": an address of quiet reverence, long before any public visits were imaginable. Johannes Brahms wished to have a commemorative plaque installed here; his wish went unfulfilled during his lifetime and was only realized nine years after his death.
In 1941, around 150 years after Mozart's death, a memorial site was established in the house for the first time. In 2006, Mozarthaus Vienna opened its doors.
The new special exhibition looks at precisely this journey: from place of pilgrimage to museum, from Mozart devotion to Mozart mediation. It traces the history of the house itself – its changing uses, its residents, its social significance. And it serves as a reminder that Mozart did not live here as a monument, but among neighbors: in a house with restaurants, shops, and the everyday life of a Viennese bourgeois address.
