La Clemenza di Tito

Servilia

Servilia, Vitellia’s counterpart, is described as virtuous and beautiful and displays initiative, courage and honesty. She is not a nineteenth-century bel canto virgin who goes mad and dies when she is engaged to the wrong suitor. She is a young Mozart woman who seeks and finds solutions to problems. She is not afraid to confront the emperor in the first act, nor does she fear Vitellia.

Mozart’s music calls for prima donna qualities with great lyricism and also some dramatic passages. It is always a reflection of his characters’ soul and emotions – in Servilia’s case virtuous and beautiful.
