Fiordiligi

Fiordiligi is a true prima donna. There is much insincere seriousness in her manner. She wants to be independent but cannot remain true to herself.

The contrived coloratura in her arias reflect her complacency. In the aria Come Scoglio she sings in a very low register for a soprano. Is Mozart showing her distress here?

Dorabella

Dorabella is Fiordiligi’s younger sister. She is much more open and natural than her sister but also somewhat weak-willed. She does not attach great importance to ceremony.

In musical terms she appears authentic. She sings without affectation, regardless of whether she is sad or joyful, happy or angry.

Despina

Despina is a mischievous servant, good at disguise and at scheming role- playing.

Her role is that of a buffo soubrette. Her arias are light and playful.
